Teaching Points
Teaching Points
- Headache is a common complaint, even in early childhood
- Thorough medical history and a physical examination are vital for the evaluation of a child with recurrent headaches
- Investigation of recurrent headache in children is often not indicated, unless the following ‘Red Flag symptoms/signs are present –
- Focal neurological signs
- Persistent headache for less than 6 months with no improvement to medical therapy
- Persistent headache in a child without a family history of migraine
- Persistent headache with confusion or emesis
- Headache that awakens the child from sleep
- Family or medical history that may predispose to a CNS lesion
- Recurrent, episodic headaches that have persisted for greater than six months with no signs or symptoms of neurologic dysfunction or increased intracranial pressure rarely require neuroimaging
